Hastings want fans to fund ‘major’ new signing

Hastings United are to increase their wage budget next season in a concerted push for promotion – but are appealing to supporters to help fund a ‘major signing’.
The club says it has spoken to a transfer target with a ‘wealth of experience at a much higher level’ but concedes his wage demands may be too high.
But United hope fans will chip in – perhaps £5 per week each – to help pay the player directly.
Hastings missed out on promotion back to the Ryman Premier Division at the first attempt this season after losing 3-2 to Folkestone in a dramatic play-off semi-final on Tuesday.
The club said its playing budget was set at its highest level for more than a decade – but is prepared to increase it further next season to achieve their aims.
The club warned this would lead to a loss of at least £25,000 but added it hoped to mitigate this with additional income streams, including the fans contributing to the playing budget – or possibly directly to a new signing’s wage packet.
In a statement, the board said: “This type of scheme has worked successfully at other clubs and it is felt that this could make a real difference to the U’s promotion ambitions.
“The aim is to put together a really strong squad ahead of the new season, but with some extra financial assistance this could look really exciting indeed.”
