Waide Fairhurst’s second half winner earned Whitehawk a crucial three points in a relegation tussle with Tonbridge.

After Steve King’s side had failed to take a series of chances, Fairhurst fired home a well-struck shot from just inside the box and the Hawks held out for an important victory.

The threat of relegation, for both sides, made this a tense affair right to the end of the game.

Inside the first 5 minutes, Whitehawk had two good goalscoring opportunities. Jake Robinson forced his way past the last Tonbridge defender but put the ball wide and Danny Mills squandered a chance when through on goal.

The Hawks argued for a penalty when Mills was brought down on 37 minutes but the referee adjudged the foul to be just outside the box. David Da Silva drove the free-kick into the wall and nothing came of the resulting corner either.

Whitehawk enjoyed the bulk of possession and chances but in the last few minutes of the first half, Tonbridge came close when Sonny Miles somehow managed to slide himself over the top of a tap-in chance.

But 12 minutes into the second half, the Hawks made the breakthrough with Fairhurst’s fierce shot beating Lewis Carey in the visitors’ goal.

It heightened the tension at East Brighton Park as Whitehawk fought to protect their lead.

Chances came at both ends and Tonbridge were unlucky when substitute Luis Cumbers, only on for a few minutes, broke free and lobbed Hawks ‘keeper Jonathan Miles, only for the ball to bounce to safety off the top of the crossbar.

Miles later got down well at his near post to save a good shot from David Ijaha as the Angels looked for the equaliser, but the Hawks kept them out for three valuable points.
